Mapping the Human Blueprint: Genome Sequencing

I recently watched an episode of Grey's Anatomy where they discussed the concept of genome sequencing. As someone who is interested in science and technology, I found this topic fascinating and decided to learn more about it.

Genome sequencing is the process of analyzing a person's DNA to identify any genetic mutations or variations that may be associated with a particular disease or condition. This involves extracting DNA from a blood or saliva sample, sequencing it using specialized equipment, and then analyzing the data to identify any variations or mutations.

The benefits of genome sequencing are numerous. For one, it can help identify genetic mutations or variations that may be associated with certain diseases or conditions, allowing for early detection and potentially life-saving interventions. It can also help identify which treatments may be most effective for an individual based on their unique genetic makeup.

However, one major downside to genome sequencing is the cost. (AMAZING RIGHT!)

wait for it..

This type of analysis can be incredibly expensive, US-based company 23andMe offers its ancestry report at $99, but its health plus ancestry reports cost $199. Firms based out of China offer their testing services at 599 yuan ($87) but they are not capable of identifying the entire gamut of diseases which Strand now owned by Reliance claims to do

making it inaccessible to many people who could benefit from it. As per a report from Allied Market Research, the market for global genetic testing was valued at $12.7 billion in 2019 and is anticipated to touch $21.3 billion by 2027 (that's Insane)

That's why I was so interested to learn about how Reliance Jio is trying to lower the cost of genome sequencing for the masses.

Reliance Industries has developed a low-cost DNA sequencing platform called "JioGenome." This platform uses state-of-the-art technology to sequence a person's DNA at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods. By making genome sequencing more affordable, Reliance Jio hopes to bring the benefits of this technology to more people around the world,

Bringing the cost down to just $145 (Rs 12000) So Cheap isn't it.

Can't wait for their rollout and unraveling my genetics history,

Overall, I was incredibly fascinated by the concept of genome sequencing and its potential benefits for individuals and society as a whole. While the cost can be a major barrier, I'm hopeful that companies like Reliance Jio will continue to work towards making this technology more accessible to everyone.
